One of the privileges of being a MBA candidate is the opportunity to attend the CKNW Chief Executive Series, which is a six week long breakfast series where a prominent local radio host interviews a top CEO of British Columbia.
The series finished last week, and though I did not attend the first session, I did go to the rest of them. Here I will state in simple phrases the main ideas that I learned from each CEO.
September 16: Wayne Drury – Coast Tsimshian Resources
- Business is all about relationships.
- My father once told me “If you ask me today for $25, I’ll kick you out of here, but if you ask me for $5, well, why not?” (About earning the confidence of the lenders little by little).
- It used to be, go the West, young man, now, it is to the North, or to the Far East.
September 23: Sue Paish – LifeLabs Laboratory Services
- It is all about the team you work with, and the mentor you get along the way.
- The three questions I always ask myself when I am in a particular position are: Am I adding value, do I feel valued, and am I having fun?
- It is not about where you see yourself in 10 years, but which qualities, and skills do you want to have in 10 years.
- In order to be successful and have a proper work-life balance, one person from the couple has to stay at home.
September 30: Shahrzad Rafati – BroadbandTV Corp
- It is all about the story you tell.
- A good presentation of that story helps to get more punch.
- Be a rock star!
October 7: Kari Yuers – Kryton International
- If you want to work on something, commit to it!
- It is all about convincing one person at a time.
- Good things take time.
October 16: Jeff Booth – BuildDirect
- It is all about relationships, and delivering what you commit to.
- Embrace failure, once you embrace it, learn from it.
- The fine line between a visionary and a fool, is perseverance.

Uno de los privilegios de estudiar nuestro programa, es la oportunidad de asistiar a “CKNW Chief Executive Series”; un desayuno semanal durante el cual, una locutora de radio entrevista a reconocidos empresarios locales.

- Antes en Canadá decían [para hacer fortuna]: – Joven, viaja al Oeste. – Ahora es al Norte o al Extremo Oriente.

- El equipo lo es todo; así como los mentores que te encuentras en el camino.
- Las tres preguntas que siempre me hago en cada trabajo son: 1) ¿Estoy agregando valor? 2) ¿Me siento valorad@? y 3) ¿Me estoy divirtiendo?
- No se trata de dónde te visualizas en 10 años, sino qué talentos o características quieres tener en 10 años.
- Para ser exitoso y tener un balance de vida y Carrera apropiado, uno de los cónyuges tiene que quedarse en casa.

- La historia que vendes lo es todo.
- Presentar la historia de la mejor manera, ayuda a que tenga más empuje.

- Las buenas cosas toman tiempo.

- Acepta los errores; una vez que los aceptas, aprende de ellos.
