As we continue to follow Lindsay Angelo in her career as an MBA graduate from SFU Business, this post comes to you with a more playful tone. If you’ve been following the story so far, you’ll know that as of the end of March, 2010, Lindsay has finished her Olympic secondment and is back to work with BC Hydro in the MPID program. Just in case you’re out of the loop, the following link will bring you to the beginning of her story: MBA Student Profile – Lindsay Angelo, MBA, MPID Here is her Olympic account:
The last few months have been nothing short of amazing. Starting my Olympic secondment in December, 2009, I was lucky enough to land in the area of Village Plaza and Events, the group responsible for all entertainment, retail, recreation and leisure in the village. Two weeks into my secondment with VANOC, shortly before Christmas, I received an email from BC Hydro (where I am currently participating in the MPID Program) asking me to write some words about my Olympic experience to date. With the Christmas spirit live and well at the time, I thought there was no better way to share my enthusiasm and excitement than through a poem. The rhymes below describe my VANOC experience with a twist!
An Olympic Poem of a Place to Call Home
By: Lindsay Angelo
T’was weeks before opening and across our fare land
Were jovial shouts – the Olympics would soon be in hand.
The Village was buzzing, finishing touches being placed,
And everywhere one looked, VANOC elves raced.
With only weeks left, opening day nears,
But there’s a confidence among workers that conquers all fears.
The doors are all hung, the walls are erected,
Heaps of wires and phone lines are being connected.
Special attention is paid to the athlete’s accommodations,
For which athletes and teams have high expectations.
These residences are where the Athletes will wake,
To days in their lives that will make or break.
Sound sleeps they deserve, sound sleeps they’ll enjoy,
On Sleep Country beds fit for the King of Troy.
The new buildings stand tall, freshly painted and clean,
In compliance with LEED standards, they couldn’t be more green.
A host of services await the athletes by day,
Of which Village Plaza and Events (VPE) will pave the way.
The VPE team will prepare a jolly good time,
For the athletes and guests to be at their prime.
A “place to call home” the village will be,
With living rooms, lounges and a live feed to see.
Soon to be complete is the Athlete’s Square,
With 20 foot lights radiating a brilliant glare.
The silhouette of a ship the lights resemble,
It is here the ships of old would assemble.
With nuggets of history buried all through,
The Village amalgamates the old and the new.
Representing Vancouver with style and flair,
This Urban Oasis hosts a celebration so rare.
The world’s greatest sporting event, the Olympic Games,
With athletes, spectators and some VERY big names.
While the VANOC elves work on endless “to-dos”,
All throughout the village, questions brew.
Will Barack, Michelle and family be through?
Or perhaps the King and Queen of Sweden, to name just a few.
The village will attract those from far and wide,
As 80 countries come for the ride!
Will Canada Own the Podium as we set out?
Will we take home hockey gold – was there ever any doubt?
With lots to do before the big day,
VANOC elves will keep working away.
Buried in scheduling up to our ears,
To make sure we retain cherished volunteers.
Without them, the Games simply won’t run.
Without them, our efforts just might be done.
And when the big day comes, may all seats be filled,
And roars of support for Team Canada be spilled.
To host the world here in BC just seems right,
with dreams of gold medals, to all a good night!
